The award was originally given under the name "European Prize for Organometallic Chemistry". On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the awarding of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry to Ernst Otto Fischer and Geoffrey Wilkinson in 1973, the prize was renamed the Fischer-Wilkinson Prize this year.

The prize was donated by the chemical societies of the EU countries as well as those of Great Britain, Israel, Norway, Switzerland and Turkey and was awarded for the first time in 2015.

Prof. Werner is the first German to receive the €5,000 prize. It is to be presented to Prof. Werner at the EuCOMC conference in September 2023 in Alcala (Spain).

From 1975 until his retirement in 2002, Helmut Werner (born 1934) held the Chair of Inorganic Chemistry II homologous rows of square-planar metallacumulenes. Werner is also known for the discovery of a new class of phosphine, arsane, and stibane complexes with bridging ER3 ligands.
