DFG funds new research training group in chemistry with 7.4 million euros
05/14/2024The Würzburg scientists led by spokesperson Frank Würthner have the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Thiruvananthapuram (IISER TVM) at their side as a partner institution.
Research Training Groups are research programs funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). They serve to provide structured training for doctoral students; the doctoral candidates work together on various aspects of an overarching topic.
The International Research Training Group 2991 (IRTG 2991) will enable a total of 32 doctorates on the German and Indian side in the coming years. All doctoral students will have the opportunity to spend six to twelve months researching at the respective partner institution. This international cooperation is coordinated by Prof. Frank Würthner (Director of the Würzburg Center for Nanosystems Chemistry) and Prof. Mahesh Hariharan (IISER TVM).

Photoluminescence in Supramolecular Environments
Photoluminescence is the property of molecules to emit light after absorbing energy. Such molecules are used in medical imaging, analytical chemistry or in light-emitting displays.
In recent years, it has been discovered that the matrix in which photoluminescent molecules are embedded can have a major influence on their properties. This potential is now to be explored in the international research training group "Photoluminescence in Supramolecular Matrices". The aim is to create tailor-made supramolecular luminescent materials with improved properties through design, synthesis and structural and spectroscopic characterization.
In contrast to a traditional doctorate, in which a professor supervises doctoral candidates, a Research Training Group offers the opportunity to carry out the work as part of a coordinated research program supported by several lecturers. There are also special courses such as seminars, colloquia and workshops.
The project is being funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) for four and a half years - with a total of 7.4 million euros for JMU. The Indian side is funded by Indian state institutions. Starting date is October 1, 2024.
