German Research Foundation Grants Funds for New NMR Spectrometers
05/08/2012The Institute of Organic Chemistry will invest 1.6 million euros to purchase two new NMR spectrometers and upgrade one of the existing NMR instruments.
Currently, three spectrometers with frequencies of 250, 400 and 600 MHz are operated in the institute. In the future two 400 MHz and two 600 MHz instruments will be available to scientists at the institute, at the Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy and from adjacent disciplines.
- The existing 600 MHz spectrometer, which is equipped with a highly sensive cryoprobe will be upgraded with a new console and will continue to be a key instruments for the structure elucidation of natural products and pharmaceutical ingredients.
- The new 400 MHz instrument improves the capacity for routine NMR measurements and will also be capable of variable temperature experiments.
- The new 600 MHz spectrometer will be optimized to investigate topics in the field of supramolecular chemistry and functional materials. For this purpose it contains special accessories for experiments in extended temperature ranges, for the measurement of diffusion coefficients and for analysis of solids.
Furthermore, the new instrumentation accounts for the growth of the chemistry department and the increasing number of students.
The corresponding proposal has been fully approved by the German Research Foundation (DFG). Therefore, the German Federation will contribute 50 % of the acquisition costs.
