Israeli Scientist Gives First Dr. Reich Lecture

11/14/2023

Ron Naaman, Professor at the Weizmann Institute, came to Würzburg on 13.11.2023 for a short visit to give the Dr. Reich Lecture 2023.

The Dr. Reich Lecture, funded by the Tauber Dr. Reich Foundation, was launched in 2023. Once a year, it is intended to offer Würzburg students and PhD candidates a special opportunity: to be provided an insight into findings of great relevance to organic chemistry by one of the scientists whose names are commonly associated with these findings in the scientific community. The lecture is named after Dr. Hans Heiner Reich, one of the two founders..

The CISS-Effekt: Bridging Chemistry and Physics

Ron Naaman's name is associated with the CISS effect, which he first described in 1999. CISS stands for Chiral Induced Spin Selectivity and describes, among other things, the phenomenon that the efficiency of electron transport throughout chiral molecules depends on the electron spin and differs in enantiomers. Accordingly, the electron spin in chiral molecules is much more strongly coupled to the molecular structure than in achiral molecules. In recent years, numerous other phenomena have been described, which are summarized under the term CISS, including greatly improved efficiency of OLEDs and photoelectrochemical water splitting through the use of chiral molecules.

Ron Naaman's lecture entitled "The Electron's Spin and Chirality - a Miraculous Match" met with great interest not only in the Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy. Numerous physicists also found their way into the chemistry lecture hall and actively participated in the scientific discussion. With great applause and best wishes for his country, Ron Naaman was bid farewell and immediately made his way back to Israel after only one and a half days in Würzburg.
