New Professor of Organic Chemistry
03/31/2009Jürgen Seibel has been appointed Professor of Organic Chemistry at the University of Würzburg. He succeeds Carsten Schmuck who left the institute in summer 2008.
After diploma and Ph.D. studies at the Georg-August University of Göttingen and a postdoctoral stay in the Dyson Perrins Laboratory at the University of Oxford Jürgen Seibel obtained habilitation in 2006 (TU Braunschweig) and has been working at the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research since 2007. In 2008 he has been awarded the Jochen-Block Preis.
Jürgen Seibel could be called a „sweet“ Chemist. His present research interests are focused on Bioorganic Chemistry and Chemical Biology of sugars. Viral diseases like avian influenza H5N1 and HIV, cancer or malaria – sugar compounds always play an important role. Prof. Seibel's group tries to identify and to synthesize such sugar compounds, in order to understand their exact function and to develop new drugs and vaccines.
Prof. Seibel will teach organic chemistry in Würzburg starting from the summer semester 2009. His classes include "Bioorganic Chemistry" for advanced diploma students and the course "Organic Chemistry for students of medicine, biomedicine, dentistry, engineering and natural sciences".
