Description
Programme Overview
Functional materials is a interdisciplinary programme in the field of material sciences.
The programme focuses on the development and optimalisation of new materials with specific functions as well as their characterisation in terms of structure and properties.
The standard programme duration is 6 semesters for the bachelor's degree and 4 semesters for the master's degree.
The bachelor's programme can only be started in the winter semester, while the master's programme can begin in either winter or summer semester.
Job Prospects
With the broadly diversified programme in chemistry, physics, medicine and the engineering sciences, there are many opportunities to realize one's professional goals.
The need for well-trained, interdisciplinary graduates is confirmed by the demands of the economy.
Materials scientists often find employment in industrial research and development, but also the fields of administration, marketing, specialist management consulting, public service or university research.
Admission
Admission to the bachelor's programme is unrestricted. This means you can enrol until shortly after the start of the semester. There is no limit on the number of accepted applicants.
In order to be admitted to the master's programme, you will need to go through an aptitude screening.
Applications for the master's programme are open until January 15th for a start in the following summer semester, July 15th for a start in the following winter semester.
For general information related to enroling in and pursuing a degree programme, please contact the Student's Affairs Office.
Structure, Objectives and Content
In addition to engineering sciences, chemistry, physics and the life sciences are integral parts of the programme.
Students learn the theoretical and practical fundamentals of these subjects during the bachelor's programme.
In the Bachelor's thesis, the skills acquired are applied in the laboratory, working on a scientific problem.
In the master's programme, you have the opportunity to individually design your course of study and choose one of two areas of specialization.
For more information on the content of the programme, please visit the department's website (in German only).
Doctoral Studies
Around 40 to 50% of master's graduates follow their studies with a doctorate in chemistry, physics or material sciences. This is particularly useful if you hope to pursue an upper management position.
The doctoral thesis usually takes three to four years to complete.
