Application and Admission
Important! New application procedure starting summer semester 2024:
International applicants for admission to the Chemistry Master's programme who completed their previous degree (e.g. Bachelor's degree) in a non-EU/EEA country will need a preliminary review documentation (VPD) from uni-assist.
International applicants who completed their previous degree in a EU/EEA country do NOT need a VPD.
Further information on the preliminary review documentation (VPD) from uni-assist can be found on the website of the International Office.
To be admitted to the master's programme, you will need:
- a bachelor's degree (total of 180 ECTS credits) from the JMU or another German or foreign university, or an equivalent degree (ex. state examinations)
- proof of competencies in the fields of inorganic, organic and physical chemistry in the form of at least 30 ECTS credits each in two of these fields and at least 25 ECTS credits in the third or - in the case of degree programmes not modularized in the ECTS format - equivalent credits of the corresponding scope
- and the determination of suitability for the master's degree in chemistry through an aptitude screening.
In order to enable an uninterrupted transition from the bachelor's to the master's programme, an applicant who is unable to provide proof of the required degree at the time of application may be granted conditional admittance to the master's programme subject to the following conditions:
- proof of at least 140 ECTS credits or in the case of a degree programme not modularized in the ECTS format - equivalent credits of the corresponding scope, in the prerequisite undergraduate degree programme at the time of application
Proof of the completion of your bachelor's degree must be presented by the time of re-enrolment for the second semester of the master's programme.
Applicants who did not earn their bachelor's degree at a german-speaking university will need to provide proof of German language skills at the B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Upon submission of your application, your documents will be reviewed to determine if you qualify for admission without the additional aptitude screening.
You may qualify for direct admission if:
- you completed your relevant bachelor's degree with a total grade of 2,7 or better
- you graduated in the top 20% of your relevant bachelor's cohort at your university
- you have not yet completed your bachelor's degree, but have a preliminary average grade of 2,7 or better in your studies thus far, which can be confirmed by the Examination Office of your current university
- or, in the case that neither a bachelor's degree nor a preliminary average grade can be presented, you can prove an average grade of 2,7 or better in the weighted ECTS credit average of all graded modules in the fields of inorganic, organic and physical chemistry.
Applicants who do not qualify for direct admission will be invited to an aptitude screening. The date for the screening will be provided via E-Mail at least two weeks in advance. The aptitude screening is intended to provide further information about the applicant's suitability for the chemistry master's programme and to determine whether he or she meets the requirements of the programme. To this end, we will test the applicant's previous knowledge of the following fields:
- Fundamentals in Inorganic Chemistry
- Fundamentals in Organic Chemistry
- Fundamentals in Physical Chemistry
The aptitude screening is made up of three oral exams, each approx. 20 minutes, and are generally scheduled during the first three weeks of March or September, shortly before your potential programme start.
Important: If you do not pass the aptitude screening on the first try, you may attempt it only once more!
A detailed description of the admission process can be found in the programme's Subject-Specific Regulations (PDF) (available in German only).
