Application and Admission
Important! New application procedure starting winter semester 2026/27:
Starting in the winter semester 2026/27, the Master's program in Chemistry will be offered as an English-language program. Accordingly, applicants will be required to demonstrate English language proficiency instead of German language proficiency (see below for details). Furthermore, International applicants for admission to the Chemistry Master's programme who completed their previous degree (e.g. Bachelor's degree) in a non-EU/EEA country will need a preliminary review documentation (VPD) from uni-assist.
International applicants who completed their previous degree in a EU/EEA country do NOT need a VPD.
Further information on the preliminary review documentation (VPD) from uni-assist can be found on the website of the International Office.
To be admitted to the master's programme, you will need:
- a bachelor's degree (total of 180 ECTS credits) from the JMU or another German or foreign university, or an equivalent degree (ex. state examinations) with a grade of 3.0 or better, and
- proof of competencies from modules worth at least 25 ECTS credits each in the three areas (i) inorganic chemistry, (ii) organic chemistry, and (iii) physical and theoretical chemistry, whereby at least 25 ECTS credits of the competencies from (i) – (iii) must come from laboratory practicals or – in the case of degree programs that are not modularized in accordance with ECTS – competencies of a corresponding scope.
In order to enable an uninterrupted transition from the bachelor's to the master's programme, an applicant who is unable to provide proof of the required degree at the time of application may be granted conditional admittance to the master's programme subject to the following conditions:
- Proof of at least 140 ECTS credits or, in the case of degree programs that are not modularized in accordance with ECTS, equivalent achievements at the time of application in the required first degree program,
- a preliminary grade point average of 3.0 or better, and
- proof of competencies from modules worth at least 25 ECTS credits each in the three areas (i) inorganic chemistry, (ii) organic chemistry, and (iii) physical and theoretical chemistry, whereby at least 25 ECTS credits of the competencies from (i) – (iii) must come from laboratory practicals or – in the case of degree programs that are not modularized in accordance with ECTS – competencies of the corresponding scope.
Proof of the completion of your bachelor's degree must be presented by the time of re-enrolment for the second semester of the master's program.
Admission to the Master's program in Chemistry requires proof of English language proficiency at level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) in an appropriate manner, for example through
- the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a minimum score of 72 (internet-based TOEFL test) or
- the International English Language Test System (IELTS) with a score of 6.0 or better or

A detailed description of the admission process can be found in the programme's Subject-Specific Regulations (PDF) (available in German only).
